The Closet Freaks
From "disability" to "disablism" to "disablement": Decolonizing colonial notions of health & wellness
Alan Shain, Michele Decottignies and Karine Rathle have each been creating original, live performance works for over 20 years, often to critical acclaim and on esteemed international stages. We've come together for this first time, out of a burning desire to put the lived experience of disability oppression in the limelight – through Closet Freaks: A risqué representation of the Affirmation Model of Disability and the social determinants of health. We strip away layers of social norms to bare disability politics, disability culture and disability aesthetics as the heart & soul of Disability Theatre, and reveal disability counter-culture as a seductive source of individual autonomy, shared resistance and systemic solidarity. Closet Freaks is an utterly unique pathway to health & wellness, which we cheekily grant YOU access to! Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out?! |
